Are you anxious about travelling with a sick friend or family member?  Did you know there is a service that can provide Travel Nannies, Nurses and Paramedics that offers a wide variety of services including meet and assist, transfers or local city guide, support for the entire Journey, assistance with Mobilisation, meals, customs and immigration.  For people with a higher medical need help is available with wound or device management, observations and a doctor for the entire journey.

So don’t be afraid there is help out there.

A few things to be aware of when booking holidays especially:

1. Choose the shortest flying time

While it may seem like a good idea at the time to save a few dollars by choosing a flight than has stop overs and long travel times you will thank yourself later for choosing the flight that gets there the fastest.

2. Have stopovers along the way if possible (more than 24hours)

Contrary to the above, if you are travelling for many than 24hours it is definitely recommended to have stop overs. To the point where you could even stay a night or two in the city you are stopping over at. This will break up the travel a lot more and not make it feel like a drag.

3. If you are transiting on the same day allow enough transit time, I always suggest a minimum of 3 hours

Don’t underestimate the power of planning your travels down to the minute. Allow for transit times and other elements while travelling e.g. toilet breaks, food breaks and potentially even sleep / rest breaks.

4. When you make a booking make sure you ask for assistance from the airline

Never be to shy to ask for help! Whether it’s asking for more foot room, an extra drink or meal or simple to put your bags up for you. Airlines are always happy to help and are more willing to help when asked. Make the most of the service, you deserve it!

5. Allow plenty of time to get to the airport so you can be relaxed when you hop on the aircraft

There’s nothing worse than being super stressed prior to even arriving at the airport. Plan your transport to the airport well in advance and always get to the airport a minimum of 2 hours before an international flight. Allow for an extra 15minutes than normal times to get to the airport from your home. You’ll get there with plenty of time to spare and won’t spend that time stressing about making the flight.

6. Carry your medication on you do not check it in

This is a must. Your medication is very important to have on you and the flight team can assist you with taking it if need be. Don’t check it in as you won’t see until you arrive at your destination. Ensure you don’t have any sharp objects though with your medication (e.g. needles, scissors etc).

7. Carry a letter from you GP with your medication list on it

This will help you with flight staff when getting clearance for your medication. It provides credibility and a source to refer to if needed.

8. Whichever countries you are going to check that your medication is ok to take into the country

Some countries are very strict with what they allow into the country. Ask your airline or travel agent which countries will allow your kind of medications.

9. Lastly do not forget to take out travel insurance

It’s not worth the risk or the dollars you think you are saving by not getting it. You only have one life and you can’t take any risks on potential injuries or circumstances which may need you to rely on the insurance. Some overseas medical centres or hospitals can charge a fortune for international treatment. A broken bone or quick visit to the hospital could turn into a financial nightmare with no insurance.
